Alicante, Spain

With family

-How long have you been living in Spain?

9 years

-What is your age?

Early 50s

-When did you come up with the idea of living in Spain?

2000 - Weather, cost of living, change of scenery, new challenge.

-Was it hard to get a visa or a work permit?

For EU citizens it is an entitlement. For most others, Visas are required.

-Was it difficult for you to get medical insurance before you went there or when you first arrived?

No, but many are entitled to Spanish national health.

-How do you make your living in Spain? Do you have any type of income generated?

I am a Freelance Writer. Jobs are currently (2009) difficult.

I was recently published in an Expats anthology 'Courting the Bull'

-Do you speak Spanish and do you think it's important to speak the local language? 

Yes - it makes life a lot easier.

-Do you miss home and family sometimes?

Occassionally, but it is only 2 hrs to the UK via cheap airlines.

-Do you have other plans for the future?

I tend not to plan so far ahead these days!

-What about housing, have you bought, or are you renting a home? How much do you pay for it?

I own property but renting is an easy option.

-What is the cost of living in Spain?

Depends on your lifestyle, but typically cheaper than most European countries.

-What do you think about the locals?

They are great! Especially if you try to integrate.

-What are the positive and negative aspects of living in Spain?

Not such a rat race as the UK and the weather helps, people have more time to be friendly, lots to do, cheaper. There is some paperwork for residencia, etc., but it is not that difficult to get organised.

-Do you have any tips for our readers about living in Spain?

Yes do your research before you arrive, learn the language, do everything legally, and be happy.
