Learning to Speak Russian is Not Easy - Learn What This Expat from England Has To Tell you

Adjusting to life in Moscow, Russia hasn't been easy for this particular expat who comes from England. But plans are afoot for learning to speak the language and getting to know more of the local people. Hopefully the experience will turn more positive for him there as time passes.

-Where were you born?

London, UK

-In which country and city are you living now?

Moscow, Russia

-Are you living alone or with your family?

With my family

-How long have you been living in Russia?

Less than a year

-What is your age?

40's

-When did you come up with the idea of living in Russia?

My partner was sent to Moscow for her job on a 2 to 5 year contract

-Was it hard to get a visa or a work permit?

Easy it was arranged for me, I was lucky

-Was it difficult for you to get medical insurance before you went there or when you first arrived?

I have medical insurance as part of my wife's job.

-How do you make your living in Russia? Do you have any type of income generated?

I am a "stay at home dad" so I don't work. My full time is looking after our child. I used to have a business in our former posting. Before that, I was a systems manager in the NHS.

-Do you speak Russian and do you think it's important to speak the local language?

I don't speak Russian yet but plan to learn. It's a very hard language. Most young Russians nowadays speak some English.

-Do you miss home and family sometimes?

I do not miss the UK, only the memory of what it used to be like. However, I do miss the English countryside, the sea and old English cooking. I enjoy cooking, running and travel.

-Do you have other plans for the future?

Who knows what the future holds? We can' really plan it, only go with it.

-What about housing, have you bought, or are you renting a home? How much do you pay for it?

I rent. Renting here is crazy and very overpriced. Finding a flat here is an experience and you need to be strong to survive it.

-What is the cost of living in Russia?

As above, very high!

-What do you think about the Russians?

I don't yet really know any, but I plan to change that very soon.

-What are the positive and negative aspects of living in Russia?

Cold, very polluted, very expensive. Positive, I don't know yet ask me in 12 months' time. Now nothing is positive about living here.

-Do you have any tips for our readers about living in Russia?

Be careful with your money and how you spend it.

-Do you have any favorite Web sites or blogs about Russia?

disappointing

aerokossa's picture

I am interested in visiting out that way, but there are so many choices. but hearing how expensive it is really i disappointing.
would be nice to meet someone from there who would want to trade visits for a time. I could not go for extended periods due to
being a single father, at least not for another ten years when she is 18. I guess that gives me a lot of time to do my research for
a future move.

RUSSIA

PADRUSHKA's picture

WE LIVED THERE FROM 2001 TILL LAST YEAR. MY HUSBAND LEARNED RUSSIAN ,REALLY RATHER IMPORTANT FOR AT LEAST ONE OF YOU TO KNOW THE LANGUAGE ALTHOUGH WE KNEW MANY THERE WHO DIDN'T.
IT TOOK AN INTENSIVE AT HARVARD, SOME PAERT TUTORING BEFORE THAT AND FINALLY 3 REGULAR YEARS AT UNIV. I REFUSED TO BOTHER.
I SPENT A YEAR IN ST PETERSBURG IN 97 AND FROM MY POINT OF VIEW MUCH NICER THAN MOSCOW. MOSCOW IS OK FOR FIVE MINUTES THEN I FOUND IT BORING UNLESS ONE WANTS TO DO THE BAR/ STRIP CLUB/ VEGAS STUFF.
THE DIFFICULTIES OF BEING A TARGET,ESPECIALLY SINCE PUTIN HAS DECIDED EXPATS CAN GO HOME. A PROBLEM WITH MILITIA WHEN I WAS THERE AND I EXPECT IT IS WORSE NOW.

GOOD LUCK IN RUS..!!
