| Hi, Can anyone recommend any travel books on China? I've recently moved to Beijing. I read a pretty interesting one called China Road a few months ago. It was useful, if a little dry. Anything else? I don't want a guide book per se. I'd even prefer fiction to the Lonely Planet etc. I want some idea of how foreigners get by here. Ta |

| Hi China Expat, I wrote a book about my time working and traveling in China which has just been released. It's called Beijing for Beginners: An Irishman in the People's Republic. See here: Beijing for Beginners for more info If you want to order it, try either Home or Amazon I read China Road too which I thought was a useful intro to China's complex history and how they relate to modern challenges. Also of interest might be a book called Back door to Beijing - by bicycle. It's very entertaining. And there's a book called Last Days of Old Beijing which I read a positive review of but haven't read yet. Naturally, I think you should start with my book as an introduction to real life for a foreigner in China but there are plenty of options depending on what you're looking for. Gary |
